When it was first introduced in science fiction novels, comics and movies, everyone made fun of it but soon after, some innovative minds started to work on it and here we are! Using AI to create beautiful websites. But where are its evil tendencies? It can probably be a myth but still we have the most genius minds of our century saying that it can be evil like the co-founder of SpaceX Elon Musk and Stephen Hawking. What to do? What not to do? We are most likely to have a future where AI will work shoulder to shoulder with humans, bots have already taken us by storm and now we have bots instead of apps. Should we be worried about them having evil tendencies?
This can be particularly troubling when we consider the tremendous benefits to be had from AI, and the possible risks. But the truth is that, a programmed device cannot make evil decisions by itself unless it is told to do so. If it is designed to be dangerous we have to blame the designer, not machine.
The real danger could be connected to use of independent artificial subjective systems. That kind of systems could be designed with predetermined goals and operational space, which could be chosen so that every goal from that set could be reached in the chosen prematurely operational space. We can avoid this danger if we design such systems that do not have their own egoistic interest and the ones that are not programmed to say ‘yes’ on evil commands.
If the “bad guys” succeed in creating such evil system then we are doomed, but aren’t we living in the possible threats even right now? Technology is already being used in so many evil ways. Why are we blaming AI? Is human intelligence less of a threat of itself?
It was welcomed as the most significant test of machine intelligence since Deep Blue defeated Garry Kasparov in chess nearly 20 years ago and didn’t just Google’s AlphaGo has won two of the first three games against grandmaster Lee Sedol in a Go tournament (You’ve been living under a rock if you don’t know this)? showing the dramatic extent to which AI has enhanced over the years.
But the question is… Can AI be evil? Albeit with different levels of skill, AI is supposedly built to maximize chances of reaching a goal, therefore supporting humans so, it really doesn’t feel like it’s going to be evil. But we all have read and seen the Science Fiction and it tell us that it’s going to be a menace. But it cannot actually become against humans unless it is programmed to do so. Since the modern day technology is being used in the negative aspect well so, the AI wouldn’t make much of a difference but we can use it to work positively and make the world a better place. Does Siri harm you? Cortana? So won’t the chatbots.
